"distance" by Ruel
I’ve been meaning to write about Ruel and one of his songs for a little while but I felt insecure and thought that no one would give a shit. But then I realized I was writing these articles for me in the first place. I write about songs I like because I like them, simple as that. But if you’re reading this, thank you :)
I discovered Ruel's music a few years ago on Spotify. I think the first song I heard of him was "Younger", followed by "Dazed & Confused". These two songs were on repeat for a long time and I still listen to them quite often. I started following what he was doing musically and I don’t think I ever disliked any of his songs.
Sometimes you don't need a particular reason to like a song, you just have to enjoy the music and that's it. That’s what happens when I listen to Ruel. But if I really think about it, the productions and the melodies of his songs are always on point, the songwriting is different than most young artists these days, which is pretty interesting to hear (he definitely works with the right people, that’s for sure) and his vocals are pretty incredible.
His latest EP Bright Lights, Red Eyes has been on repeat since October. But "distance" is the song that made all the difference to me. I always loved guitar tracks like this one. I can't seem to get enough of this song. It's very honest and emotional, and I probably played this song wayyyyy too many times but I don’t care. It’s one of these songs that make you feel something real, and I’m here for that.
Most of you probably know his music but if you don’t know who Ruel is, do yourself a favor and go check out his stuff.
ps: this Bright Lights, Red Eyes artwork is fire.
